El Nuevo Capitulo de Doris
Llegó a Estados Unidos a la corta edad de 19 años con una maleta llena de sueños, con la ambición de convertir las adversidades en oportunidades, y con la clara meta de que algún día la acompañaría la hija que tuvo que dejar en su país.
Doris emigró de Morona Santiago- Ecuador en 2005. Dejó su amado Ecuador porque no veía un futuro en su país y compartió: “sí no conocías a las personas adecuadas, era extremadamente difícil conseguir un trabajo”.
“En Ecuador no hay oportunidad de trabajar y salir adelante”, afirmó también.
A los 18 años, Doris quedó embarazada de su primera hija. Ser una joven mamá no fue fácil. Después del nacimiento de su hija y la responsabilidad adicional que eso implicaba, Doris tuvo problemas financieros en su país de origen. Ver la falta de oportunidades en su país llevó a Doris a mirar a Estados Unidos como su mejor opción.
A los 19 años llegó a Connecticut y cuenta lo solitario que fueron esos primeros años. “La gente aquí parece estar en su propio mundo. Se sentía como si uno no le importaba a nadie”
Doris admite que luchó por encontrar su camino. No sabía dónde pedir ayuda, con quién hablar y adónde ir, pero perseveró.
“Extrañaba a mi familia y especialmente a mi hija, pero sabía que no podía rendirme”.
“El que no arriesga no gana”.
Durante los primeros años, Doris se ganaba la vida trabajando en restaurantes de comida rápida. Como trabajo adicional, también limpiaba casas. “Durante 10 años limpié una casa aquí y allá, luego, en 2021, me metí de lleno en mi negocio de limpieza”.
Doris disfruta de la limpieza afirmando que le encanta ver el antes y el después. Le da una sensación de logro. Afirma que siempre se esfuerza por hacer su mejor trabajo.
“Los clientes siempre están contentos con los resultados que reciben cuando me contratan. Ha habido ocasiones en que los clientes me dan más que mi precio cotizado porque ven lo detallista que soy”. Esto la llena de orgullo.
Doris se enteró por primera vez de Grameen America por una clienta que la contrató para limpiar su casa. En ese momento, estaba tratando de construir su negocio y sabía que necesitaba el capital para invertir.
“Me sorprendió porque antes de Grameen America no conocía ningún otro lugar que me ayudara a invertir en mi negocio”.
Doris también señala que su clienta no solo le contó sobre el préstamo que recibiría. También se enteró de nuestro programa Grameen Promotoras y esto le dio el impulso que necesitaba para aprovechar la oportunidad.
“Aprendí sobre esta persona que me ayudaría, que me guiaría, que estaría ahí para mí”. Habiendo pasado recientemente por una situación difícil en casa, Doris comparte que necesitaba esa conexión.
Doris se encuentra actualmente en su segundo préstamo con Grameen America y comparte que tiene grandes objetivos para su negocio, incluidos nuevos equipos, más clientes y una mejor publicidad.
“Escuché que es muy importante para una empresa tener presencia en Internet y quiero aprender cómo lograrlo”. Como primer paso hacia ese objetivo, Doris, con la ayuda de Grameen Promotoras, se inscribió en clases de ESL en Meriden Adult Education.
“Hay que estar dispuesto a arriesgarse. El que no arriesga no gana”.
Un nuevo capítulo
Doris y la hija que tuvo que dejar en Ecuador cuando tenía 19 años se reencontraron en Estados Unidos. Ari, como la llama cariñosamente Doris, ahora también tiene 19 años.
La distancia y el tiempo no fueron fáciles para Doris y Ari ni para su relación, pero Doris se mantiene positiva.
“A diferencia de cuando vine aquí cuando era adolescente, Ari no está sola. Ella nunca estará sola mientras yo todavía viva. Le digo, siempre, cuánto la amo.”
El idioma también ha sido una batalla para la joven Ari. Doris comparte que Ari está tratando de encontrar su camino en esta tierra extranjera y, a veces, puede ver que su hija se siente fuera de lugar. Doris afirma: “Recuerdo ese sentimiento. Es muy importante sentir que perteneces y que a alguien le importas”.
Por ahora, Doris comparte que Ari terminó la escuela secundaria pero decidió no ir a la universidad. “No es lo que esperaba, pero la entiendo. Ella está tomando sus propias decisiones ahora, como lo hice yo cuando tenía su edad”.
Doris ha entrado en un nuevo capítulo en su vida como madre de una joven adulta y reflexiona sobre la importancia del apoyo emocional durante este tiempo.
Desde que se convirtió en miembro de nuestro programa Grameen Promotoras, Doris comparte el apoyo que siente en este nuevo capítulo de su vida. “Siento que hay alguien que está dispuesto a escuchar y alguien que me está cuidando”.
Doris está comprometida a que su hija sea testigo de que con dedicación y las personas adecuadas a tu alrededor para apoyarte, los sueños se pueden alcanzar. Ella espera poder inspirar a su hija para que nunca se dé por vencida, siempre mire hacia adelante y avance con confianza.
Doris’ New Chapter
She arrived in the United States at the short age of 19 years old with a suitcase full of dreams, with the ambition to turn adversities into opportunities, and with the clear goal that one day she would be joined by the child she had to leave behind.
Doris immigrated from Morona Santiago, Ecuador in 2005. She left her beloved Ecuador because she did not see a future in her country, sharing, “if you did not know the right people, it was extremely hard to get a job.”
“In Ecuador, there is no opportunity to work and get ahead,” she also stated.
At 18 years old, Doris was pregnant with her first child. Being a young mother posed a challenge as she tried to navigate her new role as a caregiver. After the birth of her daughter and the added responsibility that entailed, Doris struggled financially in her home country. Seeing the lack of opportunities in her country led Doris to look to the United States as her best option.
At 19 years old, she arrived in Connecticut and shares how lonely those first years were. “People here seem to all be in their own world. It felt like one one really cared.”
Doris admits she struggled to find her way. She did not know where to ask for help, who to talk to, and where to go – but she persevered.
“I missed my family and especially my daughter, but I knew I couldn’t give up.”

During the first years, Doris made her living by working in fast food restaurants. As a side job she would also clean homes. “For 10 years I cleaned a home here and there, then in 2021 I went full force into my cleaning business.”
Doris enjoys cleaning, stating she loves to see the before and after. It gives her a sense of accomplishment. She states that she always strives to do her best work.
“Clients are always happy with the results they receive when they hire me. There have been times that clients give me more than my quoted price because they see how detailed I am.” This fills her with pride.
Doris first learned of Grameen America from a client that hired her to clean her home. At the time she was trying to build her business and knew that she needed the capital to invest.
“It surprised me because before Grameen America I didn’t know of anywhere else that would help me invest in my business.”
Doris also points out that her client did not just tell her about the loan she would receive. She also learned about our Grameen Promotoras program and this gave her the push she needed to jump at the opportunity.
“I learned about this person that would help me, that would guide me, that would be there for me.” Having recently gone through a tough situation at home, Doris shares that she needed that connection.
Doris is currently in her second loan with Grameen America and shares that she has big goals for her business including new equipment, more clientele, and better advertisement.
“I hear it’s so important for a business to have an internet presence and I want to learn how to achieve it.” As a first step towards that goal, Doris, with the help of Grameen Promotoras, has enrolled into ESL classes at Meriden Adult Education.
“You have to be willing to take a risk. No risk, no gain.”
A New Chapter
Doris and the child she had to leave in Ecuador when she was 19 years old were eventually reunited in the United States. Ari, as Doris lovingly calls her, is 19 years old now.
The distance and time were not easy on Doris and Ari or their relationship, but Doris stayed positive.
“Unlike when I came here as a teenager, Ari is not alone. She will never be alone while I still live. I tell her, always, how much I love her.”
Language has also been a challenge for young Ari. Doris shares that Ari is trying to find her way in this foreign land and sometimes she can see that her daughter feels out of place. Doris states, “I remember that feeling. It’s so important to feel like you belong and that someone cares.”
For now, Doris shares that Ari finished high school but decided against pursuing college. “It’s not what I was hoping for, but I understand her. She’s making her own decisions now, like I did when I was her age.”
Doris has entered a new chapter in her life as the mother of a young adult, and she reflects on the importance of emotional support during this time.
Since becoming a member of the Grameen Promotoras program, Doris shares how supported she feels in this new chapter of her life. “I feel like there is someone that is willing to listen and someone that is looking out for me.”
Doris expresses her commitment to having her daughter witness that with dedication and the right people around you to support you, dreams are attainable. She hopes that she can inspire her daughter to never give up, to always look forward, and march ahead with confidence.
